Repost @once_a_caddie_always_a_caddie • For my first visit to Austin TX I wanted to get a flavor of local scene. There were a few options but Lions Municipal Course caught my attention. “Muny” as they call it, was the first public course in Austin. More notably it was the first public golf course in the South to desegregate (1950). Many Texas legends have been spotted at Muny over the years such as Hogan, Nelson, Kite and Crenshaw. In fact Ben Crenshaw & @coorecrenshaw are behind the initiative to save Muny as its existence is currently being threatened. It has been listed as one of the “11 Most Endangered Historic Places in America” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. #SaveMuny

As far as the course goes, it was an enjoyable walk with beautiful trees throughout the property. Attention to the greens seems inevitable. But it has a wonderful community feel to it. Very close to downtown. I saw the junior golf program in action, the range was buzzing, dogs following groups and the course was filled yet not over crowded. I really hope the #SaveMuny initiative works out, golf needs more places like this.
