Lions Club

The Lions Club of Austin funded and organized the construction of the Lions Municipal Golf Course, after helping to raise funds for the stadium for the University of Texas at Austin. The Lions Club received permission from the UT Board of Regents to construct a Municipal Golf Course for Austin. They built, designed, and operated Austin’s first affordable golf course. The 141-acre Lions Municipal Golf Course opened in 1924 and was managed by the Lions Club until 1936 when the lease was transferred to the City of Austin.

On October 3, 2024, the Austin Founder Lions Club will acknowledge and celebrate the national significance of Muny on its 100th birthday, and the role the Lions Club played in its creation. The Lions Muny Centennial Golf Tournament will benefit the Lions Club’s mission of vision screening for youth throughout Austin, as well as serving an inspiration for more community members to learn about Muny and its historical significance.
