Golden Age architect A.W. Tillinghast visited Muny in 1936 and 1937 to help supervise the installation of the irrigation system, much of which still exists today. The water features that exist on holes #12, #13, #16 and #17 were created as part of the plan to hold water for the course. Tillinghast’s design genius was also part of three holes on what is now the back nine (#16—the Hogan Hole; #17 and a no-longer-in-existence par 3 (which is now #15, in reverse). Tillie’s involvement is just one more reason to preserve all 18 holes at Lions Municipal. A true, historic gem in the heart of Austin.
